in grammar, is a clause that states a purpose, especially when introduced by a formula such as to, in order to, in order that, so as to, in the hope that, etc.:

• He turned on the plane's radio, in order to hear the traffic controller —New Yorker, 1972

• The Labour administration massaged the basis of the calculation of the exchange rate…so as to make the situation appear better —Daily Telegraph, 1982

• In order to fully understand an alarm reaction it is useful to think back many thousands of years to the time of the caveman —S. Enright et al., 1990

• Just dozing off willy-nilly for a few months, in the hope that the world will be a less loony place when you wake up: not an option —Scotsman, 2007.
